Make your own skincare carrot oil
I have recently achieved a higher qualification diploma in natural dermocosmetic lab technician and was happily surprised to know that I can make my own skincare carrot oil from scratch as many many other ingredient to use in my skincare formulation especially if you wish to enhance sun blockers action in your daily creams BUT carrot oil has not SPF therefore it can NOT replace a UV blocking agent as many bloggers out there say they do.
Average price in the stores for organic carrot oil would be €19 for 100 ml…WOW that is a bit expensive !! but how much cost a kg of carrots …well preferably organic carrots for the best properties ? €2 ? then you need an organic plant oil or extra virgin olive oil , even the inexpensive good grapeseed oil you can get in your supermarket would do. I have used this time the Irish brand Lakeshore .
This is all you need to make a carrot “oleate” basically an infused/macerated carrot oil. Please be aware this is NOT carrot seed essential oil which is made obviously from carrot seeds through different method which I am not sure will be either cold pressed or steam distillation ? and its use and benefits are different.
5 Organic carrots
250 ml Lakeshore grapeseed oil
Juicer (best choice ) or food processor
Muslin cloth or (sock tights “clean please” !!!)
Big airtight glass jar
Dark glass bottle
Put the dry and clean carrots in the juicer or food processor. If you using the juicer , drink the juice and get all the remain pulp, put in a muslin cloth and squeeze the remain juice . Spread the pulp in a tray linen with a kitchen roll and leave it to completely dry. Some people choose to put it in a oven at low temperature 50 degrees for few hours. If you use food processor do the same with grated carrot as if it were the pulp. The main thing here is to dry any water/moist out from the carrots pulp/grated and avoid condensation in order to not have any mould which will end in the macerated oil.
Here are images with step by step
Put carrots and vegetable oil 1:10 is 1 part of carrots and 10 parts of oil so the plant/extract proportion is 1/10. In this case I used 25grms of dried carrot and 250ml grapeseed oil. Put them in a airtight glass jar to infuse the oil for 3 weeks max. Leave it in the window seal and shake it once or twice a day.
Sieve and filter the oil few times with a tight around a beaker/jug . Squeeze as much as you can manually and you can repeat the process using the extracted oil again and again 2 or 3 times to get the most active ingredients from the carrots.
Watch my video to see how to filter the oil 3 weeks later
Put the infused oil in glass jug in the fridge (covered) for a couple of days, then decant the oil in a bottle, leaving the sediments on the bottom of the jug . Pour in a dark glass bottle and label with name and date. You can add 0.5% of Vitamin E to prevent the oil going rancid.
Use this wonderful carrot oil in your skincare formulations at 10-15% max. Carrot oil need to be diluted otherwise will dye your skin and you don’t want to look like a lumpa lumpa 🙂 !! Another use and result of using carrot oil is providing a little bit of color , nice tone to your skin. But again use it within the limits in your serum and emulsion creams. If you use it directly on the skin without dilution you will get tan quicker but this is another topic.
SKIN BENEFITS OF CARROT OIL

Below there is a nourishing face serum recipe for everyday use , but it would be a great idea if you bring it with you on your holidays and apply before SPF and aftersun exposure as it will regenerate the skin and keep it supple and nice.
