The beauty industry was certainly thrown for a loop in 2020 when the worldwide pandemic hit and people began quarantining at home for months. Not surprisingly, this greatly affected the skincare trends for 2021, and brands learnt from the events of the year before. With people spending more time at home, skincare routines have become more minimal and focused on health. At WapoBeauty, we are all about skincare that helps heal from within! Read on to discover our favourite skincare trends for 2021.
A Push for Sustainable Beauty
Skincare brands doing their part for the environment have become increasingly more common over the last decade. However, even many brands that marketed themselves as “eco-friendly” were often selling products in single-use plastic (think of all those plastic sachets and non-recyclable packaging). Granted that making a product free of synthetic chemicals is important, but what you put that product in also has an impact. Nowadays, many brands are moving towards packaging that is either fully recyclable or zero waste. Over the lifetime of a consumer, this movement will have a huge effect on the environment.
Keeping it Simple with Skinimalism
The less is more outlook is gaining traction in the beauty world, especially after the Coronavirus pandemic. With people going out less, makeup and skincare products have fewer chances for use. For the average person who works from home and maybe has kids or family to care for as well, a twelve-step skincare routine isn’t viable. In conjunction with this, there is also a movement to normalise and accept natural skin, regardless of whether it is perfect or has blemishes, age spots or wrinkles. From a mental health perspective, skinimalism is promising as it may help remove external pressure and reduce stress about always looking “picture perfect”.
Supporting the Microbiome
In combination with skinimalism, the skincare world is changing gears to work with not against the microbiome. The movement to support the microbiome has taken off in the last year and is guaranteed to continue growing. Beauty reporter, Jessica DeFino, is one of the best-known figures in the natural beauty branch of this movement. Although her perspectives can be controversial for some, she works tirelessly to educate people about skin while also sharing her skincare journey. In her own words, DeFino writes “Building up your microbiome is easy. Step one: stop using so much skincare.”
More Bespoke Skincare
Many brands have begun to offer the option of making a personalised skincare product for customers. Naturally, they found great success, leading to other brands following suit. Considering that everyone’s skin is different, we see this trend continuing to skyrocket as more people discover the joy of using products formulated for them. With years of experience formulating, Mayca will tell you that something made expertly just for you is better than anything you can buy in a shop. We hope to see more bespoke skincare in the coming months and years!
Skincare that Soothes the Mind
2020 was an immensely stressful year, and for many, 2021 continues to be just that. Therefore, more skincare companies are exploring crafting products that promote relaxation and minimise stress. Entire self-care rituals are springing up with products that use herbs, essential oils, and other natural ingredients that help soothe the mind. In fact, this is perhaps the biggest trend at the moment, as it can also be combined with natural oils and self-massage tools such as ice globes, ranavat kansa wands, guasha stones or jade rollers. However, we will be interested to see how this trend develops as the year goes on!
The Takeaway
The skincare trends for 2021 illustrate that people have reevaluated how they approach beauty since the dreaded year of 2020. While still advocating for the environment, the focus has shifted to simpler natural beauty products for a skincare regimen that is both healthy and balanced.
