Properties of the Ingredients

Rice

Those lovely little grains have been hiding amazing skincare benefits this entire time. Can you believe it? Well, the Japanese have been using rice water for over one thousand years and we now understand why. Rice water contains plenty of nutrients that can help repair your skin. Studies have shown that rice water can even out your skin tone by reducing dark spots, redness, and hyperpigmentation.

Back in 2013, a study indicated that using rice wine, or fermented rice water, could help repair sun damage on the skin. Therefore, rice wine is believed to have natural sunscreen properties. It also boosts collagen levels in the skin, leaving it supple and wrinkle-free. Rice wine possesses anti-ageing properties due to its antioxidants and pore-tightening abilities. Not to mention that it can also help regulate and balance your skin’s sebum. Many beauty products use rice water as an ingredient. Rice water is often used to treat:

  • Sun damage – When combined with other natural extracts, rice water can help protect the skin against the harsh rays of the sun.
  • Damaged hair – Inositol, a natural chemical in rice water, repairs damaged hair from the inside out including bleached hair and split ends!
  • Dry skin – Known for naturally treating irritation, rice water is especially helpful for skin damaged by sodium laurel sulfate (SLS).
  • Inflammation – Rice water can soothe skin topically and help it heal. It’s even said that it can treat skin conditions like rashes and eczema.
Crafting your Rice Skincare Products

With just one powerful ingredient you can make four natural skincare products!

Rice Toner Mist

To make this natural skincare product with rice, you’ll first need to wash some rice. The amount depends on you, but we’d say start with a small quantity first and see how you fare. After you wash your rice, place it in a glass of water. Leave your rice to soak in water overnight. The next morning, sieve the water from the rice and store it in a container of your choosing. Ideally, this should be a container with a spray nozzle or at least a lid for proper storage. You can then use this water as a toner or spray for your face. Apply it all over your skin and rejoice!

Rice Face Mask

For this face mask, you’ll need a coffee grinder, Nutribullet or something similar. Essentially, you need to grind the grains down into very fine pieces. Once the rice is finely ground, add water or oil depending on how your skin is feeling on the day. With this mask you should massage your face gently, there’s no need to be rough or scratch your skin. Rinse your face with tepid water afterwards to completely remove the mask.

Rice Water Wash

Making a rice water wash is very straightforward. Just like in the toner procedure, add washed rice to water and let it soak overnight. The next day, sieve the water from the rice and store it. You can use this wash to cleanse your face or rinse off other skincare products.

Rice Water Bi-phase Cleanser

A few days ago, Mayca explained how to make a bi-phase cleanser on the WapoBeauty Instagram. Visit the Bi-Phase Cleaner highlight for this procedure. You can use the same rice water from your toner mist or wash.
