Cleansing our skin is a delicate affair. Consider that our skin has a trillion microorganisms living on its microbiome, working day and night to maintain its balance. So, any time we cleanse our skin, we should be gentle and work in harmony, not against these hardworking little microorganisms. Although now and again, our little friends need a helping hand to tackle signs of ageing, fine lines, and even pigmentation. In this recipe of the month, practice a little self-love and treat your skin with a brightening Vitamin C cleanser.
Ingredients
To make 10 g (one or two uses), you’ll need:
- 2 g Rice flour
- 2 g Coconut milk powder
- 1 g Vitamin C (L -ascorbic acid)
- 1 g Ground dried rose petals (for a natural, nice scent)
- 2 g Oat flour
- 2 g Bentonite clay or any other clay of your choice
Properties of Ingredients
Here we’ll explore the natural properties of the ingredients.
Rice Flour
Rice is a multifaceted ingredient, from its water to oil to even its flour, all of its forms provide some natural benefits. This flour, in particular, is commonly used in serums and masks for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory abilities. Studies have also shown that the phytic acid extracted from rice can naturally treat acne and hyperpigmentation. Other benefits commonly associated with this flour are natural oil absorption and the possibility of improving wound healing.
Coconut Milk Powder
Soothing coconut milk can be found in an array of cosmetic products from hair masks to moisturisers to cleansers. This milk provides antioxidants and amino acids, allowing it to naturally boost your skin health. Furthermore, coconut milk also contains a variety of skin-loving medium-chain-triglycerides as illustrated by a 2018 study, thus making it a powerful multipurpose ingredient. The MCTs in coconut milk provide both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. All in all, this ingredient can naturally cleanse, hydrate, and soothe skin.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is one of the best and most multifunctional ingredients in the cosmetic world. Some would say that L-ascorbic acid is the king of Vitamin C for the skin. One of its many benefits includes minimising the signs of ageing, including fine lines and wrinkles. This powerful ingredient is also known to brighten skin and help combat environmental stressors, such as free radical damage caused by UV rays.
Rose petals
Aromatic, romantic, and filled to the brim healing abilities, there’s plenty to celebrate about the petals of a rose. Rose petals contain antibacterial and astringent properties that can keep skin clean and healthy. Also, roses have antioxidants and are known for their soothing and moisturising abilities. In a cosmetic product, this ingredient brings the best of both worlds: skin-loving properties that will also help you relax while you cleanse.
Oat Flour
Oats have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that are perfect for removing old, dead skin cells and nourishing skin. Furthermore, oat flour can absorb excess oil present in the skin and therefore is wonderful for treating acne. Since oats possess a natural compound known as saponins which work as cleansers, they are ideal for de-clogging pores and removing dirt, as well.
Bentonite Clay
Clays are excellent for cleansing the skin, but this clay is specifically known as “healing clay” in many cultures. In fact, the Aztecs were huge fans of Bentonite clay. When it comes to skin, Bentonite has a reputation for clearing complexions, treating rashes, and working to eliminate dandruff. This clay also contains many wonderful minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and others. Bentonite mixed with liquid provides an ‘electrical’ charge which binds to metals in the body and removes them.
Crafting Your Brightening Vitamin C Cleanser
Before you begin, you’ll need to find a little, opaque, and dark jar to store this cleanser in as Vitamin C is extremely sensitive to air and light. Then, mix all the powder into the dry, clean, and sanitised jar. Make sure you close the jar tightly and store it in a dark, cold place. This cleanser is suitable for ALL types of skin, particularly old, mature, uneven skin tone, or dull skin that needs a quick reviving boost.
Tips for Use
Curious to know how to apply your brightening Vitamin C cleanser? Simply pour enough powder for one use into the palm of your hand and add a bit of water to form a paste. Then, gently rub the paste onto your face and massage in circles, but try not to scratch your face. Leave it on for a few seconds and remove with a damp face towel. Follow up with the application of your moisturiser and SPF 30 minimum.
