While there are plenty of natural cleaners you purchase in the shops these days, it’s always helpful to have recipes you can use in a pinch. Whether you’ve run out of cleaning products or have a special job to do, natural homemade cleaners are always there to rescue you. Most of these cleaners can even be made using products you already have at home. From cleaning counters to banishing smells, there’s a natural homemade cleaner for every task. In this article, we’ll share some of our favourite natural homemade cleaners and how you can make them at home!
Cleaners For Stains
No two stains are alike, so choosing the correct cleaner depends largely on the type of stain.
- Grease stains – If a stain has yet to set, sprinkle baking soda on top of it. Although if it has already set, you should add dish soap instead. Leave the cleaner of choice for a few minutes before gently scrubbing the stain with a brush. You can repeat this process until the stain is gone. Finally, wash the garment as you normally would.
- Wine and coffee stains – Time is of the essence with these infamous stains, but don’t worry there are both wet and dry options. It’s best to try to gently dab most of the liquid out before applying a cleaner. Wet natural cleaners include gin and vinegar, which you should apply directly to the stain, dab with a dry cloth, and repeat until the stain is gone. As for dry cleaners, try soaking the stain with water, adding baking soda, and leaving it to do its magic overnight.
- Food stains – Both baking soda and vinegar can also be used to remove food stains from clothes. However, if you don’t have either of these cleaners, you can also use club soda or tonic water. The carbonation in these beverages makes them wonderful natural homemade cleaners. Before applying these cleaners, remember to blot away any leftover food, apply the cleaner, then gently scrub the stain for best results.
Natural Homemade Cleaners for Glass
Cleaning our windows and mirrors at home with the right cleaner makes all the difference. Of course, when we use a cleaner, we also want it to smell nice. This natural homemade cleaner is ideal for cleaning your windows and leaving your home smelling fresh.
You’ll need:
- Water
- White or Apple Cider Vinegar
- 70% Isopropyl Alcohol
- A few drops of the essential oil of your choosing (preferably a citrus scent)
To make this cleaner, you’ll have to use 8 parts water, 2 parts vinegar, and 1 part isopropyl alcohol. Mix the ingredients and use this natural homemade cleaner as you would a normal glass cleaner. The alcohol will evaporate and leave your glass streak-free!
All-Purpose Cleaner
Sometimes we need a cleaner that won’t only leave our house smelling fresh, but will also work on just about everything. In comes this natural homemade cleaner, complete with some of our favourite herbs! Perfect for cleaning countertops, wiping away hard water stains, and tidying up after dinner. For this cleaner, you’ll want to have a dedicated spray bottle as the mixture will need to infuse for about a week before you can use it.
You’ll need:
- Water
- White Vinegar
- Lemon rind
- Rosemary or lavender
Combine 1 part water with 1 part vinegar in the spray bottle of your choice. Then, add lemon rind and rosemary or lavender, whichever of the two scents you prefer. Close the bottle, shake, and leave it somewhere for a week to infuse. After a week, you are free to use this natural homemade cleaner anywhere. However, we don’t recommend using it on granite as it can etch into stone.
Natural Homemade Deodorizer
Life is full of wonderful smells like fields of flowers, herbs, and delicious food. Nonetheless, in our homes, there are plenty of less-than-great smells like drains or dirty microwaves. To tackle the strong odours in your house, you can use this powerful, natural homemade cleaner. This cleaner works for cleaning stainless steel appliances, tidying up your refrigerator or freshening up your kitchen sink.
You’ll need:
- Baking soda
- Warm water
Combine 4 parts baking soda with 1 part warm water to make a paste. You can pour this down the drain and flush with water to fight smells or apply it to a damp cloth to remove stains. If you’re using this paste on stainless steel, be sure to rub in the direction of the metal’s grain.
